The first Official Guide was published in 2000 when the Network covered 5000 miles. The revised edition covers more than 6500 miles open in 2002.

The 256-page guide is co-authored by Nick Cotton and Sustrans' chief engineer, John Grimshaw, with a foreword by Tony Robinson of Baldrick and Time Team fame.

The guide is divided into sections for the nine UK regions. Each region has: a summary map showing on-road and traffic-free sections, the long-distance maps available; highlights along the way; city focus; traffic-free paths particularly suitable for families; and sample day rides.

The 32 sample day rides throughout the country include advice on suitability for very young children, surface, grade and hills, nearest railway stations. Routes are shown on detailed, Ordnance Survey-based mapping with step-by-step instructions. Little green cycle logos denote bike shops.

The Guide also includes advice and practical tips for new cyclists and cycling with kids;

information on longer routes; and ways to support Sustrans' work. There are new sections on traffic-free cycling for families and cycling in towns and cities.
