Tabloid-sized trade mags face extinction, warns publisher's trade org

The Periodical Publisher's Association has warned that plans by Consignia could sign the death warrant for tabloid trade magazines because of possible new price bands for magazine mail-out costs. Bicycle Trade and Industry is a monthly tabloid and Cycle Industry, now to be a quarterly and no longer edited by Beccy Sims, is planning to go A3 in July

Consignia has kept the PPA informed of its proposed price changes for magazine mail outs via the Presstream service and the PPA is lobbying hard to make the 'Post Office' drop its controversial proposals.

The PPA has told Consignia chairman Alan Leighton at a face-to-face meeting that Royal Mail's proposals for switching to size-based pricing would wipe out news-based tabloid publishing.

Tabloid sized trade mags would face postal cost increases of an average of 50 per cent.

The risk for Royal Mail is the same as for publishers, that titles made unprofitable by the move would be closed.

Cycle Industry is changing to an A3 format for its first quarterly issue claimed to be due on 1st July. Advertisers have been told that Beccy Sims is no longer the editor as she has been moved on to other titles in the Mark Allen Publishing portfolio. Suppliers have been told that Cycle Industry is now produced by an advertising sales manager, with 'editorial' copy supplied by advertisers, who either take display ads or pay for photo 'seperation costs'.

BicycleBusiness is an A4 magazine and would not be affected by any new Presstream price structure. In fact, under the proposed plans, it would actually cost slightly less to post than usual.
