On Friday, 51 workers at Tandem’s Brigg factory were informed they were being made redundant in July. This leaves 100 workers still in place.
About 60 000 bikes will continue to be produced per annum from Brigg’s remaining production line.
"We will continue to build our added-value bikes in Brigg but can’t justify the cash outlay to make the medium and low-end bikes here," said Bell.
"This was a difficult decision to make. It hurts a great deal."
The Tandem Group has also recently withdrawn its long-standing membership of the Bicycle Association of Great Britain.
"I couldn’t justify the membership fee when I was about to make 51 people redundant," said Bell.
In the year ended 31st January 2004, the Tandem Group had a turnover of £56.26m, up from £37.32m a year earlier (£18.8m contributed by MV Sports) and saw profit before taxation rise to £609 000 compared to £234 000 in 2003.
