Dubbed 'Cyber Monday', predictions from Visa value today's spending at £450 million plus

Today set to be ‘biggest online shopping day’

Today is anticipated by many to be the busiest day of the year for online retail, with Visa experts expecting around £450 million to be spent.

Dubbed Cyber Monday, Amazon is predicted to be the busiest of the bunch, with an estimated 3.5 million orders set to be placed. Last year Amazon sold 41 items per second on the Monday closest to the start of December.

If you’ve yet to get a few eye-catching deals on the front end of your site, fear not, the peak hours for transactions are expected to be this evening when people arrive home from work, with a spike expected between 8pm and 9pm in particular.

"UK consumers’ love affair with online shopping will reach its peak on Mega Monday," said Jeremy Nicholds, director of commercial development at Visa Europe.

"Online shopping now accounts for more than 25 per cent of spend with Visa in the UK, signifying the confidence that consumers have in the security of online payments and in the delivery of goods."
