Scottish time trialist, Jason Macintyre, was killed yesterday while out on a training ride. The 34-year-old Scot was rushed to Belford hospital following a collision with a van. However, he died shortly after arrival.

The rider, who leaves behind twin daughters, won the Road Time Trialss Council national 25-mile championship in both 2006 and 2007, as well as breaking the Scottish ten mile time trial record in 2007 and winning the British time trial championship in 2006.

The day before the incident, Macintyre was informed that he had been granted funding to aid his training ahead of the 2010 commonwealth games. It is believed he may also have been in line for a spot on the Olympic GB cycling team.

Scottish Cycling president Jock Shaw said: "We have lost one of our finest cyclists."
