Trek to match contributions to World Bicycle Relief in July

Partnership aims to raise enough to supply 1,300 bicycles to Africa
Publish date:

Trek Bicycle is partnering with World Bicycle Relief to double the impact of donations made during July. Trek will match contributions, dollar for dollar.

Since its inception in 2005, World Bicycle Relief has put over 137,000 bicycles into the hands of people living in developing countries, most notably rural African communities lacking transportation infrastructure. The organization's Buffalo Bikes are assembled locally and represent a life-changing asset to a person in need. A bike can quintuple a person’s carrying capacity, and quadruple the distance one can travel in an hour. To someone living in rural Africa, a bicycle can provide access to clean water, medicine, and an education. The power of mobility created by a single Buffalo Bike is said to have a positive impact on the lives of five people in a given community.

Brandon Buth, Trek’s Advocacy Director, said: “Bicycles have the power to shorten distances to school, work, or hospitals, where other transportation options don’t exist."

“We’re excited to support World Bicycle Relief’s efforts with the Trek Match campaign. We’re hoping Trek riders around the globe will join us in doing so.”

SRAM's F.K. Day, co-founder and president of World Bicycle Relief, said: “Trek has been a valued supporter of World Bicycle Relief since our origins in 2005. Their commitment to match donations this July will help double our efforts in empowering students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs in rural Africa with life-changing transportation.”

The charity has just recruited Steve Cromwell to head up the charity's UK presence.
