Evans Cycles has reported increased sales of hybrid bikes during the London Underground strikes this week.
The firm revealed a ten per cent rise in hybrid sales during the industrial action compared to the week previous. The figure is particularly significant as the week prior included the August Bank Holiday Monday – a traditionally strong sales period.
Women’s recreational and men’s urban bikes sales also saw a rise during the strikes according to the retailer, up 20 per cent on the previous week.
Evans Cycles head of marketing Neil Fitton said: “While some say it was an inconvenience it was amazing to see thousands of Londoners out on their bikes showing this truly is a cycling city and long gone are days of relying on the tube.”
The strikes also boosted numbers using Transport for London’s Barclays Cycle Hire scheme, up 60 per cent compared to previous days. The rise comes despite the fact the roll out to casual users has been delayed until the end of the year.
