UCI signs pact with International Paralympic Committee to increase opportunties for getting disabled people on bikes

"This Agreement is very important for the UCI and for the whole cycling world. Since a long time already, cycling for disabled is supported by our Federation and we will continue to co-operate for its development," said UCI president Hein Verbruggen.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) will later today sign an Agreement of Co-operation. In the Agreement, the UCI and the IPC consent to collaborate in the sport of cycling for athletes with disabilities.

The agreement is good for four years.

"The Agreement will ensure and enhance the quality of the sport of cycling in general and for riders with a disability in particular," said Phil Craven, IPC President.

"The IPC looks forward to a fruitful co-operation with the UCI."

The latest UCI Cycling Regulations, with modifications to accommodate the specific needs of riders with disabilities and acknowledging the range of cycle types used, will govern the cycling competition at the Paralympic Games as well as the IPC Cycling Championships.

In co-operation with the IPC, the UCI will add a category designated 'Riders with Disabilities' to its list of licence categories for men and women. Furthermore, the UCI and the IPC will encourage the worldwide growth of cycling for disabled people with an PR campaign aimed at affiliated national cycling federations and National Paralympic Committees.

Craven and Verbruggen will sign the Agreement of Co-operation during the XVII Commonwealth Games, at the Velodrome in Manchester, at 3pm.
