The Metropolitan Police has reacted to the recent spate of cycling deaths with the launch of 'Operation Safeway', which at its peak will see up to 2,500 traffic police overseeing 166 key junctions in London.

Running from today through to Christmas, around 650 officers are said to be deployed at present, with that number gradually increasing through the festive period.

Operation Safeway will involve the use of fixed penalty notices to anyone breaking traffic laws, including pedestrians and cyclists.
