Video: Bike manufactured from cardboard for just $9

Engineers said it would be impossible, but Giora Kariv has proved them wrong
Publish date:

Inspired by a man who created a cardboard canoe, inventor Giora Kariv has defied engineers to create a fully cardboard bicycle.

Using techniques not too disimilar to oregami to boost the cardboard's strength, Kariv says a mass produced version would cost between just $9 to $12 to make and it's full waterproof. Kariv estimated that stores could retail them for around $60, presumably minus the brakes, which are standard cables and calipers seen on road bikes.

Designed to be strong enough to host a rider of up to 140 kilograms in weight, it took several prototypes to come up with a complete working model strong enough. What's more, the finished product, although quirky looking, does not look like it's made from carboard.

Could this be the disposable bike that won't hurt the wallet too much if stolen? Or perhaps a build more accessible to regions of the world with low disposable incomes?
