Vienna and Adelaide will host the world’s most important cycling planning conferences, after being selected from a shortlist by the European Cyclists’ Federation. No British cities applied to host the conferences.

Vienna will host the 2013 edition while Adelaide will be home to Velo-city global 2014. The two cities were selected because of their commitment to cycling and their capacity to host an international conference.

“Having visited all shortlisted cities, among them Rio de Janeiro, Nantes and the BrabantStad Region of the Netherlands, it’s been a really tough choice,” said Bernhard Ensink, Velo-city conference Series Director and ECF Secretary General.

Ensink added: “All five cities had strategies on how to improve the conditions for cyclists. At the end of every site visit, I wanted to organize a conference in each and every one of them.

"Vienna has 6 percent of all trips done by bicycle, while Adelaide has an estimated 1 to 2 percent of trips on two wheels. Both cities have ambitious strategies in place to boost cycling numbers."

ECF expects more than 1000 global cycling experts including top politicians, urban planners, transport ministers, transportation experts and cycling specialists to attend each conference. The next Velo-city Global conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada, June 26-29, 2012.
