York's Community Cycle Unit, set up in July 2002, has been a pedal-away success. The biking bobbies have clocked up 102 arrests - 45 per cent more than PCs in cars.
The fully-equipped mountain bikes used by the unit - complete with flashing blue lights and sirens - can get to places cars can't go, including cycle-paths, woodland and through the narrow alleyways in the centre of York.
Biking police generally make a lot more drug busts because they can quietly creep up on dealers and users, and this has been found to be the case in York, too.
