York's cycle cops need top kit and sponsorship

The four-man Community Cycle Unit, based in York city centre, is to be expanded, with up to six new pedalling officers being recruited. But this expansion requires sponsorship, and the provision of tough kit. The York cycle cops - like biking police all over the world - make many more arrests than their soft, air-conditioned, hamburger-fueled car-bound colleagues. And they take less 'sickies' too. Er, none in fact.
Publish date:

York's Community Cycle Unit, set up in July 2002, has been a pedal-away success. The biking bobbies have clocked up 102 arrests - 45 per cent more than PCs in cars.

The fully-equipped mountain bikes used by the unit - complete with flashing blue lights and sirens - can get to places cars can't go, including cycle-paths, woodland and through the narrow alleyways in the centre of York.

Biking police generally make a lot more drug busts because they can quietly creep up on dealers and users, and this has been found to be the case in York, too.
