Youth Hostel Association invests in cycling

£269,500 to be spent on locking and repair facilities at UK hostels

The Youth Hostel Association is set to invest £269,500 in adding cycling facilities at 25 of its branches across England and Wales.

The Hostelling charity is investing £108,000 in cycling facilities - including bike parking, pumps and repair stations - with a further £161,500 coming from generous grants from local and National Park authorities. This is the first phase of YHA’s investment in cycling facilities, with the second phase to be announced later this year.

YHA Berwick, YHA Helmsley, YHA Malham, YHA Hawkshead, YHA Keswick, YHA Castleton, YHA Hartington Hall, YHA Hathersage, YHA Ilam Hall, YHA National Forest, YHA Edale, YHA Ravenstor, YHA Eyam, YHA Youlgreave, YHA Conwy, YHA Eastborne, YHA Holmbury St Marys, YHA London Lee Valley, YHA South Downs, YHA Truleigh Hill, YHA Bristol, YHA Dartmoor, YHA Eden Project, YHA Swanage, YHA Wye Valley

Caroline White, chief executive of YHA (England and Wales) said: “We’re delighted this funding will enable us to further boost our efforts to improve cycling facilities across the YHA network. It is further commitment to making Youth Hostels more accessible so people can discover the wonderful experiences the UK can offer.”

Since 2010, the charity has refurbished 34 of its locations at a cost of £21 million, earning the YHA the title of Best UK Hotel in the 2014 Guardian Travel Awards, beating established hotel chains Marriott and Radisson to the top spot.
