Cavendish gets the chance to follow in Chris Hoy's footsteps

Can Mark Cavendish overcome the odds for Sports Personality of the Year 2010?

The BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year will be revealed this weekend, on Sunday December 19th.

This year Mark Cavendish is in the frame for the high profile accolade. Cavendish is one of a shortlist of ten, put together by a panel of 30 sports editors from national and regional newspapers and magazines.

Cavendish won five stages of the Tour de France this year and won the points jersey at the Tour of Spain. Notably, he is the second Briton to score a sprint title in one of the world’s top three stage races.

Sadly, according to the bookies Cavendish is 80/1 – so says Coral and Paddy Power at time of writing. Ladbrokes has (slightly) more optimistic odds of 50/1.

Cavendish came fourth in last year’s SPOTY, which was won by Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs. But despite the odds, cycle fans will be hoping Cavendish can follow in the footsteps of Chris Hoy, winner in 2008 following that year’s spectacular cycling triumphs at the Beijing Olympics.

The show takes place at the Birmingham LG Arena and will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC Radio 5 Live and begins 1900 GMT.
