At today's ACT AGM, the board agreed to provide an extra £1000 to ETRA, the European Two-Wheel Retailers' Association. This is on top of the £1730 annual subscription. The ACT was the last national bicycle organisation to agree to the cash boost. ETRA - run by Annick Roetynck - was facing "enormous financial stresses" ACT members were told today. The lobbying body survives on annual subs from member associations but orgs in Switzerland and Finland recently pulled their membership, and there's little representation from the powerful dealer orgs in Germany, the biggest bike market in Europe.

ETRA had wanted the ACT to agree to a funding package of £3045 in 2004 but at a board meeting following today’s ACT AGM, held at the terribly trendy Baltic art centre in Newcastle on Tyne, the ACT has deferred making a decision on its level of financial committment until next year, when it will likely have more members and could end up giving ETRA more cash than it was expecting.

ACT membership expanded by 15 percent in 2003.

ETRA’s president – it’s a three year term of office – is Nigel Hill of Sidcup Cycle Centre.
