The sailing trio won't be presented with their medals until Saturday so Chris Hoy's Olympic gold in the kilo is officially Britain's first, something the mainstream media will focus on. Good for British Cycling and cycling in Britain.

Chris Hoy’s gold medal is Britain’s first at Athens

As the BBC Olympics presenters pointed out at the conclusion of the 4-lap race, Chris Hoy’s medal ceremony will see the first outing of the British national anthem – and the first raising of the Union Jack – at the Athens Olympics.

At the Sydney Olympics four years ago, Jason Queally won Britain’s first gold, also in the kilo.
