Old French standard re-emerges to do battle with 29er. Schwalbe prepare for a big year for both sizes

Eurobike 2012: Schwalbe debuts 650B range

Schwalbe is to launch a ‘wide range’ of 650B tyres at Eurobike this week, including versions of its new all mountain tyre the Hans Dampf.

Noting the trend toward bigger wheels, Schwalbe has prepared for a big year of 29er sales, though also anticipates the ‘middle ground’ size will surprise many.

"650B bikes have some technical advantages that make sense," says Schwalbe’s Senior Product Manager Markus Hachmeyer. "The size represnets the golden mean of two biking worlds, rather than the average of two established sizes."

It is expected that 650B versions of the Rocket Ron, Racing Ralph, Nobby Nic, Rapid Rob and Hans Dampf will feature at Eurobike.

650B is an old French dimension that has been in existence for decades and is approximately a 27.5 inch wheel-suited size, which corresponds to a rim diameter of 584mm.
