Every year over four million Germans choose to buy a new bike, with nearly 70 per cent purchased at ‘qualified retail shops’.

In Germany there are 5,640 sales outlets classed as specialist retail shops by the German Bicycle Retail Association (VDZ).

Half of all revenues (€1.021 billion from a total of €2.151 billion) in the German retail bike industry are generated in stores with total annual sales between €100,000 and €1,000,000, according to the association. Replacement components and accessories make up 20 per cent (with repair work making 13 per cent) of total revenue in the retail trade.

Germany’s best known bike show, Eurobike, is taking place from August 31st to September 3rd 2011, with the Demo Day on August 30th. This year’s advanced ticket prices have been cut for the consumer open day on Saturday, while entrance fees for the trade days have risen slightly – admission passes covering all four days of the exhibition will cost €40 when purchased in advance, instead of €36.

There’s more on the German cycle market in last year's territory report.
