David Millar’s “race bike” Brompton becomes available again, but only briefly

Late last year Brompton and David Millar’s CHPT3 brand launched a run of 700 performance-led, stripped back versions of the iconic folding bike. Demand far exceeded expectation, with many of these bikes being sold before they even reached stores. As a result a second and final run of this bike is being released into selected stores internationally from the 12th February, says Brompton.

The CHPT3 Brompton features a titanium rear frame and front fork, which have never before been featured on a Brompton.

Ex-pro Millar rarely used a bike as a form of transport instead only riding when competing or training. He agreed to try a Brompton after meeting Brompton CEO Will Butler-Adams. He went on to use a modified "race ready" Brompton in the Brompton World Championship Final in 2015. This inspired a collaboration between Millar and Brompton, leading to the batch of 700 CHPT3 bikes.

"I met David at a lunch, blissfully unaware that I was chatting to a cycling legend, who eats the alps for breakfast and knows more about lycra than most," said Butler-Adams.

"Whilst we may have come to cycling from two extremes we share a strong belief in how cycling can make urban living a joy. David borrowed a Brompton, he loved it and the freedom it bought but wanted to make it his own. He understands better than most what competitive cyclists look for in their bike and has applied this insight to develop the CHPT3 Brompton.”

Millar said: “I’d never thought of myself a Brompton rider, as cyclists we tend to pigeon hole ourselves, and I am a racing cyclist.

" A lunch spent next to Will changed that, he explained to me the philosophy, ethics and engineering of Brompton and I was hook, line and sinker. I’d always treated my road bikes as tools, yet tools specifically designed for training and racing, my Brompton on the other hand has become a much more useful tool, a bike that serves to get me from place to place with zero hassle, and, more often than not, lots of fun.

"I did have one concession, I wanted the CHPT3 Brompton to strike more of a resemblance to a BMX than a race bike, we have stripped it down and made it a little more aggressive and performance led than the classic Brompton.”

The Brompton CHPT3 edition comes with a sparkle fire red front frame, sparkle grey main frame and Titanium fork and rear frame in Black. All bikes have S type handlebars with no mudguards, with a choice of 2 or 6 speed gearing. Prices start at £1720. The Brompton CHPT 3 bike will be available in Brompton Junction stores and selected dealers worldwide.
