Public consultation to run until March 30th

DfT sets BS 6102 consultation period (revised story)

The DfT yesterday sent out a consultation letter on the topic of when CEN standards should supercede BS 6102. The response deadline has been set for March 30th, though nothing will be set in stone until what is predicted to be mid-to-late 2009.

The original date to move BS 6102 stock was January 1st, however an extended and ongoing grace period was granted by the DfT.

The vast majority of new bicycles will now have to comply with the EU-wide CEN safety standards, although there are grey areas surrounding BMX, for example, which is yet to be given defining rules.

The mechanism for bringing the standards into UK law is for Parliament to retire BS6102 in favour of adhering to the General Product Safety Regulations.
