Cycle trade event Taipei Cycle Show dedicated more space than ever to the electric segment last week.

The show, which ended on Saturday (March 20th), dedicated over twice as much space to the electric sector than last year.

TIATRA, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council and Taipei show organiser, partnered with the German electric bike promotion organisation ExtraEnergy and the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan (ITRI), organising an electric test track for the event. 20 companies provided e-bikes for the test rides.

Additionally, 350 visitors attended an electric conference (the 2010 LEV Symposium) to explore future electric bike trends, examining international markets, regulations and environmental standards.

The China Motor Corporation (CMC) used the Taipei show to launch its entry into the electric bicycle sector. The firm has a US $900m turnover and is Taiwan’s second largest car assembler and distributor (for Mitsubishi).

The bicycle division of CMC is GreenTrans. The division’s general manager Leon Liao said: “Our main intention was to first introduce the brand and set up distributor network around the world. A strong second focus was on ODM clients to apply our proprietary technology to various markets. Main interest came from Europe and Japan for both our standard and e-bike program.”

Eurobike has also promised to dedicate more space to electric bikes in the show later this year.
