The Environmental Transport Association has revealed a new bicycle – the B.O.N.D (Built of Notorious Detterents) bike – which has been designed to keep riders safe in today’s cities.
The bike features an ejector seat to repel thieves, flamethrower handlebars to keep traffic at a safe distance, a caterpillar track to navigate pot-holes and a ski to replace the front wheel in icy weather.
It was created by insurance provider ETA which questioned 800 cyclists about their main fears when cycling – the aim, of course, to illustrate the dangers facing modern cyclists.
52 per cent of cyclists feared traffic passing too close, 25 per cent feared poor road conditions, seven per cent were concerned about thieves and two per cent were uncomfortable riding in bad weather.
"Wannabe James Bonds will be disappointed to hear that we have no plans to sell the B.O.N.D Bike, but it shouldn’t be necessary for cyclists to resort to flame throwers to get a little consideration on the roads," said a spokesperson on the ETA website ilovemybike.co.uk.
"Correct road positioning and an assertive riding style can dramatically reduce cars and lorries passing too close."
