Seleted Halfords stores will start selling fixies in March, confirmed the high street and shopping park retail chain.
Three fixies will be available, one of them badged with the VooDoo brand. VooDoo was originally created by MTB racer legend Joe Murray and, in the UK, is sold exclusively through Halfords.
The bikes will all feature ‘flip flop’ hubs enabling riders to switch between riding fixed gear or singlespeed. The range kicks off with the retro-looking £249.99 Real Singolo. Real is a Halfords house brand. The VooDoo Lofa has deep section painted rims, interrupter brakes and riser bars and will retail for £299.99. The range tops out at £329.99 with the Create Original.
As well as being available in some stores, the three fixies will be available from the Halfords website.
This isn’t quite the first time Halfords has sold fixies. Halfords was founded by Frederick Rushbrooke in Birmingham in 1892 as an ironmongery and he sold bicycles, too. Most bicycles of that time were fixed wheel. In 1902 Rushbrooke moved to a store on Halford Street in Leicester. Freewheels on bicycles were fitted to the Whippet brand of bicycles from 1896 and most manufacturers had at least one freewheel model by 1898 but fixed wheel designs remained popular for many years.
