Custom Bike Mechanic

Website Spoon Group Ltd (Spoon Customs)

We need an incredible bike mechanic to build award winning custom bikes, from scratch.

Spoon Group is the fastest growing handmade custom bike company in the UK. We have three brands, Spoon Customs, WyndyMilla and Gun Control Custom Paint.

We design build and finish incredibly detailed hand made custom bikes, to the exact requirements of our customers. Started in the French Alps, but now based in the Surrey Hills, we focus on fast road and adventure bikes made in steel and carbon fibre, and will soon expand into e-bikes.

We need someone who wouldn’t contemplate not tapping a thread in a new rear mech hanger before mounting a mech, and who thinks using a DT 5.2 is an essential professional part of a proper bike build.

If you know how to do a ratchet upgrade in a hub and where to find the parts, that’s a bonus. If you can confidently recommend a tubeless tyre and rim combo from a choice of five carbon rims, and as many tyres, that’s awesome too.

You’ll need excellent problem solving skills, and a good understanding of the traditional skills needed to build custom frames into bikes, from scratch; reaming, facing, tapping threads, heat shrinking cables, lining stuff up, and making sure it’s absolutely spot on.

It doesn’t matter if you’re Cytech qualified, experience is more important, but we do need someone that is a highly competent, detail orientated and efficient mechanic who wants to build bikes to the highest standards every single time.

The role offers plenty of scope for professional development and could become a management role for the right person as volume increases.

Essential skills:

  • Expert and up to date knowledge of SRAM, Shimano, Campagnolo electronic and mechanical systems, fitting, servicing and diagnostics.
  • Working knowledge of or experience with Classified, Mahle, Rotor, and new tech and systems helpful.
  • Practical experience and expert knowledge of all bike shop tools and processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to the highest level of customer experience.
  • Professional curiosity, flexibility and a commitment to maintaining and development of your skills.
  • It doesn’t matter if your current position doesn’t always require the use of every tool in the shop, but you must be able to demonstrate an in-depth practical understanding of the role of a custom bike mechanic and each task involved.

  • Understanding of bike fit and working with detailed fit data.
  • Experience working on own initiative and managing own time and working week
  • Experience ordering parts, specifying and preparing high-end builds

We offer an inclusive, laid back but hard working environment in a barn, on a farm in Surrey near some incredible riding. We’re always focused on delivering the very highest standards and we work with the best parts and highest quality frames in the world.

The role could be full or part time, and we can pay up to 32k pro rata for the right person, with plenty of scope for professional development and salary growth as the company grows.

We are also putting together an ambitious employee share option scheme and will be making equity available to long term team members.

We believe in a better way of making bikes, and care deeply about the people we work with in our supply chain, the provenance of the products we produce and our impact on the planet. We’re putting together a sustainability strategy just now, and you’ll be expected to input into and contribute to the development and delivery of that work.

If you’re interested in joining our small but growing team we’d love to hear from you.

Salary: 32k pro rata
