Salary: circa £23,000 per annum

Hours: 36.5 hours across the whole week to include weekends and occasional evening working

Contract Type: Fixed term contract until 31/03/2023

Location: This position will be based across the district of Tendring in Clacton-on-sea & Jaywick Sands.

The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS) is an independent social enterprise and a registered Community Benefit Society, which works with some of the poorest communities in Birmingham and beyond to improve people’s health and wellbeing through physical activity. It delivers services on behalf of Birmingham City Council and was previously known as the Birmingham Wellbeing Service.

Introduction to the Role

This role is responsible for building a range of bikes, carrying out pre-delivery inspections and general repairs, and the servicing of our fleet of bikes. To deliver a range of bike repair sessions including Dr Bike and maintenance workshops along with any other associated duties as required.

Introduction to Essex Pedal Power

Essex Pedal Power is a new and exciting community-based project being piloted in Clacton and Jaywick Sands, which allows eligible residents over the age of 12 to apply for a new FREE quality bicycle. The new inclusive programme aims to make cycling accessible for everyone providing access to employment, training and educational opportunities or key local services. The pilot scheme is the first of its kind to be rolled out in Essex and will distribute 1,300 bikes in phases throughout 2021-2023, and if successful will be rolled out to other areas of Essex.

Free training is offered to successful applicants who want to learn how to ride a bike, gain confidence in riding a bike, and understand basic bike maintenance.

Essex Pedal Power is a partnership of Active Essex Local Delivery Pilot, Essex County Council, The Active Wellbeing Society (TAWS), Tendring District Council, Sport England, Cycling UK and local stakeholders and community groups.

  1. Build a range of bikes to cater for the communities that we serve.
  2. Carry out pre-delivery inspections of (a) bikes that we have purchased from our preferred supplier(s) and (b) bikes being sent out from our workshop for use in the community.
  3. Carry out general repairs and the servicing of our bike fleet using an agreed schedule as approved by the Manager. This will include bike repairs being carried out in our workshop and also at our Bike Hubs in the community.
  4. Identify, order and fit a range of bike parts that are needed to ensure the maintenance, or enhancement, of our bike fleet within an agreed budget.
  5. To work in an entrepreneurial way with the community to deliver Cycle Maintenance Workshops and Dr. Bike sessions.
  6. To set-up and maintain an electronic inventory of our bike stock.
  7. Maintain an electronic servicing record for our bike fleet
  8.  To work with the Manager to ensure the brand and integrity of our projects.
  9.  Any other reasonable tasks as required by the Manager.

Duties may vary from time to time without changing the general character of the post or the level of responsibility.

  1. Cytech or City and Guild Cycle Mechanic qualified (or willingness to complete this qualification immediately upon appointment).
  2. Comprehensive experience of working in a bicycle workshop.
  3. Ability to build a range of bikes upon delivery from our preferred supplier(s) to meet the organisation’s deadlines.
  4. Good partnership and relationship management skills.
  5. Excellent team player with the ability to deliver a first class technical service through high standards and the efficient turnaround of maintenance and repairs work.
  6. Clear knowledge of quality assurance processes. Experience of using quality assurance to assist service delivery.
  7. Excellent problem solving skills.
  8. Good computer skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is desirable.
  9. Knowledge and understanding of the cooperative principles and commitment to ensuring their delivery in the course of undertaking the role.
  10. Experience of working proactively, working on own initiative and as part of a team.
  11. Driving licence or preparedness to work towards securing one.
