TartyBikes is a bike trials (think Danny MacAskill!) specialist online retailer, and we have been operating near Preston, Lancashire since 2004. Through the years we have formed close links with riders from all over the world, supporting the niche trials community with a vast level of expertise, knowledge and the highest levels of customer-focused service.

Currently a small and close-knit team of long-term cycling nuts, staff have their own key responsibilities but are also trained and encouraged to operate within a wide range of roles, allowing variety and cross-over especially during busy periods. Once fully trained and familiar with what is required, work is carried out autonomously and without external pressure ‘from above’ – we have no sales targets, weekly meetings, etc. – so a successful applicant will require high levels of self- motivation and meticulous attention to detail.

Longer-term the owner, Adam, is looking to take a step back from day-to-day work, yet still offering support where required, and leave the company in capable hands.

We have an immediate opportunity for another like-minded and organised individual to join our passionate team, where their role will be mostly comprised of:

  • Building new trials bikes to a complete state, starting at various levels of pre-assembly from ‘roughly already bike-shaped’ to ‘all the parts are in a box and even the wheels need building!’
  • Carefully re-packaging bikes ready for mail order dispatch out to customers all over the world
  • Hydraulic brake bleeding and other related skills
  • Basic repairs of MTB, BMX and road bikes (gears/cabling, brake setup, headset and BB fitting, etc)
  • Some basic stock management using our custom-built back end system, to ensure stock levels are kept up to date in real-time

The successful applicant does not need to have industry-relevant qualifications such as Cytech – though these will, of course, be recognised – instead, a high value is placed upon meticulous attention to detail and a problem-solving approach. As you may gather from the above, the role requires more of a ‘mechanic’ than a ‘bike assembler’, owing to some of the other unique workshop services we offer and are renowned for: such as helicoil repair of crank arm pedal threads, Chris King hub servicing, and assembly/bleeding of our hydraulic disc brake system using two calipers mated to one lever.

Further roles – such as order picking/packing, stock management, customer service, website/product information updating and basic admin/accounts work – can also be added in order to offer variety and allow cover when other staff members are off.

The description above should make it clear what skills are required to be a successful applicant. In addition; a knowledge of bike trials, some experience with machine tools, a keen interest in sustainability and previous experience in a similar role would be a huge benefit, but these criteria are not essential as full training can be provided.

We’re open 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, with an hour for lunch which is treated as strict down time. Other than the odd bike-related event; evenings, weekends and bank holidays are all yours – unless you wish to take on overtime, which is always available but never compulsory.

Starting salary: c.£22,000 depending on previous experience, plus: all staff have access to bikes and parts at cost price, our privately-invested pension scheme, are invited with their partners to work outings a couple of times a year, and are automatically enrolled in our bonus scheme. This is pro-rata with net company profit, with the bonus amount increasing (up to a maximum level) with each year at the company.

If you think you’d be a good fit and love to work within our team, we look forward to hearing from you – many thanks!
