According to the bookies, Lance Armstrong is fancied for a successful return to competitive sport this weekend.
Ladbrokes reckons Armstrong is 3/1 to win his first race over 1,650 yards at this weekend’s Masters South Central Zone Swimming Championship in Texas.
Armstrong is 2/1 to take home the freestyle title over 500 yards, or there’s 3/1 on offer for a middle distance win over 1,000 yards.
As the BBC notes, Armstrong is able to compete because US Masters Swimming events are not subject to USA or World Anti-Doping Agency codes.
The move will seen Armstrong return to making headlines faster than some might have expected, following his very public exposure as a drugs cheat last year. David Walsh was recently awarded for his work in exposing Armstrong at the Sports Journalists’ Association annual British Sports Journalism Awards.
Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: "The other competitors will have to keep their eye out for a shark in the water this weekend. Armstrong’s bound to be fitter than your average 41 year-old and that’s why he’s the jolly."
UPDATE: All bets are off because Armstrong has now withdrawn from the race following pressure from swimming governing body FINA.
