Butterworth Spengler advise riot-damaged shops to notify local police authority

Insurance firm issue update on step-by-step guidelines published on BikeBiz.com earlier this week

Insurers to the cycle trade Butterworth Spengler, following issuing guidelines earlier this week, has advised riot-damage affected businesses to report their case to the local police authority.

Updating BikeBiz this morning, a spokesperson said: "Following the recent violence on the streets, many businesses affected will be looking to their insurance policies and making claims. There is some important information that they should be aware of because of the nature and circumstances of the damage.

"In addition to your insurance policy, under the terms of the Riot (Damages) Act 1886 there is scope for claims to be made against the Police/Government, but there are strict timescales that have to be met in order for these claims to be ‘valid’, i.e. within 14 days of the date of the riot giving rise to the loss or damage. There is also a specific claim form that has to be completed which can be found by following the link below. The form is on page 4."

Further detailed information is available from the Association of British Insurers web site:

"In the first instance, contact your usual insurance advisor, whether that is a broker or the Insurance company as quickly as possible to notify them of the claim."
