Space, a video showing how to safely overtake cyclists starring Chris Boardman, has had 306,000 video views in its first week. The video was produced by the Bicycle Association and co-funded by British Cycling. 221,607 views have been achieved on YouTube, with 84,154 on Vimeo. A follow-up video on the legalities of riding two abreast has had 34,221 views in four days.

The videos were filmed at the Devon Travel Academy, near Exeter, and feature riders from the Exeter Wheelers. A cameo role – "child riding next to Chris Boardman" – is played by the young son of driving instructor Blaine Walsh. The short films were written and directed by Carlton Reid, executive editor of BikeBiz.

The films – paid for by the industry's Bike Hub levy fund – have been plugged by the official Twitter accounts of the Highway Code and Road Safety GB.

The Bicycle Association is to explore creating 30- and 60-second versions of the Space video and for it become an official Government-endorsed "public information film", to be made available to broadcasters as filler material.
