This month, though only half way through, has posted the worst fatality figures for cyclists for seven years.

At the time of writing, 13 riders (not far off one per day) have been reported killed across the UK, the highest number since 2008 when 14 were recorded in the entire month.

According to Department for Transport stats, the average number of deaths involving cyclists on the road for January is 9.8, a still shockingly high and unacceptable figure.

There are of course a few factors to take into consideration, with a milder than usual winter perhaps encouraging more cyclists on to the roads than usual.

Read more detail on the stats and details on the incidents to date over on road.cc.
