The campaign urges local councils to take advantage of the TfL funding for better conditions for walkers and cyclists

London Cycling Campaign and Living Streets launch campaign for a more Liveable London

The London Cycling Campaign and national walking charity Living Streets have launched their first ever joint campaign, calling on all the main candidates in this year’s London borough elections to create a more liveable London.

Called My Liveable London, the campaign will enable voters to press their future council leader to access available funding for major projects to make their boroughs safer for walking and cycling and improve quality of life for all.

By pledging to create areas where everyone can walk and cycle safely and happily, future council leaders will send a strong signal to Londoners that, if elected, they will make it easier for people to choose to leave the car at home.

Subsidy is available to councils for these transformative projects from the TfL Liveable Neighbourhood programme, through which councils can access up to £10 million of funding. London Cycling Campaign and Living Streets want to ensure that future councils take full advantage of this money to help transform their boroughs into places where families and communities are put first on the streets, and where motor traffic, pollution and congestion don’t dominate public spaces.

CEO of London Cycling Campaign Ashok Sinha commented:“Councils have the chance to transform their boroughs by creating places that work better for the people and the communities that use them, and help undo the damage caused by over-dependence on the car. By supporting a Liveable London, future council leaders can signal their intention to take on some of the big issues facing London - from air pollution to the health impacts of inactivity - building a safer, happier, and more Liveable London.”

Chief Executive of Living Streets Joe Irvin added:“Traffic and poor air quality affects everyone living and working in London. With millions more people due to live, work and commute in the Capital in years to come, the problem will only be exacerbated.

“That’s why we need all local parties to commit to prioritising walking and cycling so we can create healthier neighbourhoods, happier communities and a more Liveable London.”
