Research reveals that 34 per cent of those taking part use one of the three brands

Specialized, Giant and Trek most popular for UK sportives

A second year of research into UK CycleSportive participants has been published BY SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC (SMS INC.)

The established research player in the sports market has polled participants at key events in the UK in the 2013 season (listed at the foot of this story).

122 different bike brands were used by sportive participants (up from 87 in 2012), but 34 per cent of the sample used one of three leading brands. The top ten bike models on show came from seven different brands.

Specialized and Giant retained their status in the top three brands in 2013, while Trek replaced Bianchi in the trio.

79 different wheel brands were tallied, with the top four brands producing the ten most popular models. Similar info was compiled on group sets, helmets, shoes, eyewear and apparel.

MD John Bushell said: “Our work at CycloSportive events over the past couple of years has offered our clients significant, previously unavailable insight into a key sector of consumers. We believe the completion and availability of this new research could prove invaluable for road bike brands particularly, as the CycloSportive participant is of great importance to their business.

“Being the second year that we have conducted this research – with the addition of the extensive European events – is particularly significant as it enables brands to analyse fluctuations in their market share for the first time, as the sport grows so rapidly."
