The race to become the next London Mayor is hotting up ahead of the election on May 3rd, with transport policy one of the key areas expected to win or lose votes.

Current London Mayor Boris Johnson is up against former Mayor Ken Livingstone, both of whom have played a part in the recent growth of cycling in London. Campaigning officially started today and Livingstone's transport manifesto for the capital has won some praise from sustainable transport charity Sustrans.

Sustrans’ London director Carl Pittam said, “Ken Livingstone sees that Londoners want a choice in how they get around and is committed to providing transport for all – unlike Boris Johnson whose focus leaves out the millions Londoners who don’t own a car.

“Many people in London’s suburbs want safer routes get around by bike so it’s great that Ken has promised to invest in traffic-free greenways.

“London’s streets would be safer for everyone with a 20 miles per hour speed limit on residential streets – whoever wins the election must strive to make this the norm.”

According to an Evening Standard story, Livingstone has also been given backing, with reservations, from the Green Party.
