30-year-old man arrested following incident in east London on Tuesday

A woman is fighting for her life following a hit-and-run incident with an e-bike in east London on Tuesday.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at around 11pm yesterday on suspicion of causing bodily harm, failing to stop, and failing to report a collision.

The woman, 56, was crossing Kingsland High Street in Dalston, east London, just after 5pm on Tuesday when she was hit by a cyclist on an e-bike.

An air ambulance took the woman to hospital, where she remains in a life-threatening condition.

Scotland Yard stated that the man in question temporarily stopped after falling off his bike in the collision, but sped off shortly after.

The bike was abandoned later on Tuesday and was quickly recovered by police.

The police are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Detective Constable Darren Case said: "We need to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time. Did you see the cyclist before, during or after the collision?

"Maybe you are in possession of dash cam footage or filmed the cyclist on your mobile phone as he made off. If you did, it is vital that you make contact with us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath on 020 8597 4874 or call 101 quoting CAD 5837/28 August.

The incident will undoubtedly fuel the controversial debate around e-bike safety and laws, which remain the in the air following a European Commission proposal in May.
