A Belfast-based company is developing a new power measure technology for cyclists.
Laser Spoke’s development is, it says, ‘universal, accurate and affordable’ for all cyclists, whether they’re triathletes, recreational cyclists or commuters.
The system measures the power produced during cycling, which can be used to monitor workout and calories burned, as well as used to optimise transmission, cadence and position on the bike, making riding more efficient.
The initial Laser Spoke model uses an SD card to store ride date for upload to a computer, but will eventually integrate ANT+ for communication with a cycle computer or phone.
Dr Gennady Lubarsky told BikeBiz: "Recently we started our campaign on Indiegogo crowd funding platform (http://www.indiegogo.com/laser-spoke), where supporters can sign up to be a beta tester ($550) or pre-order the final power meter product ($750).
"We decided to keep our project open and are planning to build a good team of developers and testers. In my opinion, this is also a interesting social test for the cycling community."
Dr Lubarsky added that development targets include shrinking the electronics and creating an an aerodynamic body for the meter.
