Sports Direct under the spotlight as legality of contracts heads for date in court

Legal challenge to Zero Hour contracts

Retail giant and bicycle seller Sports Direct is to face a legal challenge over its use of Zero hour contracts.

38 Degrees is to raise funds to back a tribunal case brought by law firm Leigh Day in order to test the legality of the treatment of employees on such contracts – which could set a precedent for other businesses using the employment method. A win in court would also back the Government into a corner to tighten up employment law rules to protect vulnerable employees.

National news sources report that all part-time Sports Direct staff are on the Zero Hour Contracts. The firm has so far not commented on the reports.

Such contracts offer employees no guaranteed hours week to week, no holiday pay, or sick pay.
