Final day Westminster Grand Prix joins Sweetspot organised event

London to host Tour of Britain women’s race

An elite women’s Westminster Grand Prix will form part of the final day of this September’s Tour of Britain bringing the UK’s top racers to the Whitehall circuit.

Tour of Britain organisers SweetSpot Group, as part of their commitment to women’s cycling, will host a one-hour race taking place on the iconic Westminster circuit passing some of London’s most famous landmarks.

“This is a fantastic chance to provide spectators with the chance of seeing more top class racing and some of Britain’s top female cyclists in action during the final day celebrations in London,” said SweetSpot Director Guy Elliott.

The event will be the second opportunity for Britain’s ever growing field of female racers to compete in the heart of London during August and September following last weekend’s successful Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix.

The Westminster circuit will see riders racing past the likes of Downing Street and Northumberland Avenue, before heading along the Embankment and through the shadow of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The final corner will bring riders through Parliament Square and back into Whitehall in front of the massed Tour of Britain crowds.

A large field of riders, ranging from club cyclists to Olympic Champions, is once again hoped for in an E1/2/3 field, with entry available now via the British Cycling online entry system at a cost of just ÂŁ5.

Action from the Westminster Grand Prix will be incorporated into The Tour of Britain’s television coverage on ITV4 and on British Eurosport.

SweetSpot’s has ambitions for a Women’s Tour five-day international stage-race to be launched in 2014, as reported on BikeBiz last month.

The Tour of Britain gets underway in Peebles in the Scottish Borders on Sunday 15th September, finishing in the centre of London eight days later on Sunday 22nd September, with live coverage in the UK on ITV4 and British Eurosport.

Amateur cyclists wishing to be a part of the Grand Depart weekend can join in The Tour Ride Scotland on Saturday 14th September, taking on 50 and 100-mile Rides between Peebles and Drumlanrig Castle. To find out more and to register, please visit www.thetour.co.uk/tourride
