Alessandro Petacchi is in the pink, thanks to his Cipollini-besting thigh muscles and his magnesium Pinarello Dogma. This bike was first seen at the Milan bike show in September 2002. With race success, magnesium frames and bits will become that much more desirable. And Pinarello bikes make you go half a kilogram faster...

Magnesium proves its mettle at Giro d’Italia

The Dogma bike has been supplied to three members of the Fassa Bortolo team and is made from AK61 magnesium with tubes produced exclusively for Pinarello by Dedacciai.

The Dogma features the new carbon-fibre Campagnolo Record cranks, the new carbon-fibre handlebars from DedaElementi, carbon-fibre Look pedals, and a Magoo magnesium stem.

Later in the Giro, Fassa Bortolo riders will use Pinarello Mondello carbon-fibre time-trial bikes. A statement from Pinarello says that, in an amazing breaking-the-laws-of-physics feat, these bikes have been "lightened by almost half a kilometre compared to the previous model."
