Local businesses compete to notch up cycle miles this summer

Milton Keynes launches Cycle Challenge

Businesses from across Milton Keynes have teamed up to back the Cycle-MK Challenge.

The free competition, running from June 21st until July 11th, aims to help workers rediscover the joys of riding a bike by building it into their daily lives.

Businesses will be pitted against each other to see which can get the most staff cycling during the competition.

The challenge is being run by MK Council, NHS Milton Keynes, Department of Health South East, CTC and Challenge for Change.

Participants can log their cycle miles on the campaign website where they’ll be able to see how many calories they’ve burned, how much CO2 has been saved, their total cycling time and distance covered.

Doctor Bike maintenance sessions and cycle skills training will take place over the three weeks.

Milton Keynes’ keen cyclist Mayor Debbie Brock said: "Everyone rides a bike when they’re a child but as we grow up, we tend to leave the bike behind and take the car, go to the gym and do other things. This is a great way of reminding people just how much fun cycling is. It’s healthy, cheap and a great family activity too."

Cycling and walking development officer for Milton Keynes Council Ceri Griffin is heading up the challenge for the council: "The Cycle-MK Challenge is the latest in a planned schedule of activities over the coming years to encourage widespread cycle usage in Milton Keynes. With over 100 miles of cycle lanes, our redway system provides an easy and quick way of moving around the city at all times of day.

“This challenge is open to all businesses regardless of size. It’s free and easy to take part and there will be lots of activities to help get more people cycling so let the fun begin.”
