The Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix will feature a new format for youths, with inter-regional races for boys and girls on Saturday 9 August.
The organisers have worked closely with British Cycling to create the new format for the Youths Grand Prix races. Each of the British Cycling regions has been invited to enter a team of girls and a team of boys for the event.
The route is a fast, flat 1.3-mile loop around St James’s Park that starts and finishes on The Mall. The riders will race towards Buckingham Palace, through three tight turns onto Birdcage Walk followed by a 90-degree turn into Horse Guards. The final turn at the end of Horse Guards brings them back onto The Mall.
“This is an amazing route,” said double Olympic champion Laura Trott, winner of last year’s Prudential RideLondon women’s Grand Prix. “It’s got The Mall, Buckingham Palace and fantastic crowds. Racing here is the chance of a lifetime and I hope as many teams as possible take the chance to experience it.”
A prize pool of £4,250 is up for grabs, with money awarded to the top five teams and the top 10 individual finishers in each race. The first placed team will receive £500 and the first individual across the line will be awarded £300.
“Youth development is key to British Cycling’s success both in terms of growing participation and also in the supply of talented riders to represent the country at the highest level,” said British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake. “So this is the perfect event for British Cycling’s regional youth teams. It gives them the chance to race in professional conditions in the centre of London.”
