Glasgow is being thrust further into the sporting spotlight with next year’s Commonwealth Games and, potentially, as host of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
The city will have to wait until July to find out if it has been successful in hosting the Youth Games which would provide the city with chance to develop a ‘real legacy’ from Glasgow 2014, according to chairman Lord Smith.
Other cities on the shortlist include Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Medellin (Columbia), as announced in a press conference in Switzerland yesterday.
The first summer Youth Olympic Games was held in Singapore in 2010. The Games follow the traditional four-year cycle with the next summer’s Games being held in Nanjing, China. The 2018 Youth Olympic Games will involve approximately 3,600 athletes, aged between 15-18 years, participating across all of the 28 Olympic sports over 12 days of competition.
Glasgow 2014 Chairman Lord Smith said: “I would like to congratulate the Glasgow 2018 bid team on their successful shortlisting as a Host City for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
“Scotland has a growing reputation for staging successful world-class events and securing the 2018 Youth Olympic Games would be a fantastic opportunity to build on the experience and skills developed through delivering an outstanding Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
“Hosting another global sporting event in the city will continue to develop real legacy and impact from Glasgow 2014 as well as demonstrating the warmth and enthusiasm the city and Scotland holds for athletes and spectators.”
