Halfords sponsors Bikeability Trust

The Bikeability Trust is to be sponsored by Halfords. The trust is the national charity for cycling training. Bikeabilty is "cycling proficiency for the 21st Century."

The sponsorship will allow for 25,000 more primary school age children in England to access cycle training programmes. Campaigners have long urged for the Government to place cycle training on the National Curriculum.

Halfords will provide free bike safety checks for children taking part in a Bikeability programme, as well as for their parents, teachers and trainers.

Bikeability is based on the government’s National Standard for cycle and instructor training. It helps beginners to start learning in traffic-free environments before eventually developing their skills and confidence to progress on to local roads to tackling often busier, multi-lane roads and complex junctions.

Transport minister Jesse Norman welcomed Halfords’ support for Bikeability: “Halfords’ investment in cycle training for children is a great boost for the delivery of the Bikeability programme. This investment in the future generation of cyclists will allow us to reach and train more children than ever before.”

Halfords CEO Graham Stapleton said: “Safe cycling unlocks confidence and encourages daily activity. By helping more children cycle more safely and more often, families will be inspired to get out on their bikes.”

Bikeability Trust CEO Paul Robison added: “Working with Halfords will give us the chance to extend our scope, to reach thousands more children and help raise awareness of cycling as an essential life skill.”
