UPDATED: Charity to send 100th shipment of unwanted bikes to Africa

Re~Cycle charity ships over 450 bikes to Ghana

Bicycle aid charity Re~Cycle will be collecting unwanted bikes and parts in Wimbledon, South London, on February 12th to be donated to countries in need.

Re~Cycle has already donated 467 bikes to Ghana, where the bicycles are used as essential transport for going to work, school or moving goods to be traded, saving time and easing usually back-breaking work.

The collection will take place at the Abel and Cole depot at Waterside way, and anyone in the area is encouraged to take the opportunity to rid of unwanted biking items while helping a good cause.

Re~Cycle’s van also collects unwanted bikes, parts and tools in the north London area (after arrangement made via London@re-cycle.org).

Re~cycle collects every second Saturday of the month at the same place and time. They also ask for volunteers, to help with marketing and preparing bikes for shipping.

UPDATE: On Thursday February 10th and Friday 11th in Colchester Re~Cycle will send its 100th shipment of unwanted bikes to Africa. The latest shipment will go to Mombasa in Kenya. In the past 12 months bicycles have also been sent to Namibia, South Africa, Malawi and Tanzania.

The charity said: "We are very grateful for the kind generosity of the people of Colchester and Essex who have supported our work by donating their unwanted bicycles.

"We are also owe a huge debt of gratitude to the many local volunteers who every week, help prepare the bikes for shipment.

"Recyke Y’Bike is a local bike re-use project in Newcastle which send us bikes and parts.

"Re~Cycle is also thankful for the support it receives from Colchester Council, The Essex Probation Service and The Military Corrective Training Camp at Colchester Garrison as well as from many local churches, schools and scout groups that have helped us reach this magnificent total."
