Stephen, a 16-year old ex-street child from Mombassa, will now be able to cycle the 20-km round-trip to school after he received the 60,000th recycled bicycle from Re~Cycle, the UK charity that sends unwanted bicycles for use in Africa.
Established in 1997, Re~Cycle is the UK’s longest established bicycle recycling charity, whose local African partners refurbish and distribute bicycles to targeted beneficiaries like children, women and health workers.
A bicycle covers four times more ground and carries five times more load in weight than a person on foot. This means more education, economic and social opportunities, enhancing lives in a continent where transport is non-existent or prohibitively expensive.
Merlin Matthews, founder of Re~Cycle, said: "Research in Ghana reveals that each bicycle is shared amongst six to nine people, by families and fellow villagers. That means we have helped change the lives of at least 360,000 people!”
