Transport for London (TfL) will review 500 junctions as part of a major review of cycle safety following pressure from cycle safety groups.
TfL has now confirmed St George’s Circus, Highbury Corner and Stockwell Gyratory will be prioritised while work is also underway to review junctions on the Barclays Cycle Superhighways. Including Cable Street, Stockwell Gyratory and Grove Road/Burdett Road.
TfL said the junctions have been prioritised using a combination of customer feedback, post-launch road safety audits and collision data. TfL has formed a steering group and held the first of a series of meetings with key stakeholders as part of the junction review programme. Senior TfL staff and representatives of the main road user groups – including freight vehicle drivers, motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and road safety organisations – are to continue to meet regularly to discuss the progression of the review. That group will help TfL to consider the design options for various junctions and to identify a preferred option in each case.
“We are seeing a step-change in both the way that people choose to travel, but also in the way that cyclists are viewed on our streets," said Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. "That is why I firmly believe that we must now start to evolve the means by which we plan and manage our extensive network of roads, and why I have asked TfL to review hundreds of key junctions across the capital to specifically examine safety and provision for cyclists.”
TfL added that discussions are currently in place with cycling groups and key local stakeholders on improving safety at Bow Roundabout in east London. The new design would look to give cyclists an ‘early start’ at green lights as one of a number of improvements to be made there. It is hoped that work will be able to begin in April 2012 soimprovements can be delivered ahead of the London 2012 Games.
‘Urban realm improvements will be made too including measures to improve pedestrian accessibility.

By getting key stakeholders from road user groups involved as part of our junction review process, we can build on the good work and skills-base already available to ensure London becomes an even more world class city for cyclists.”
