‘Nigerian’ scam gets industry-specific

IBDs and suppliers have reported getting emails from AMAVIC Ltd promising a $20m contract to supply bicycles to a Federal Ministry of Sports in an unnamed country.

Reply to one of these emails asking for further details and you may be asked to furnish bank account details in order for ‘AMAVIC Ltd’ to make an advance payment of a few million dollars as a ‘goodwill gesture’.

BikeBiz.co.uk replied to AMAVIC Ltd. and their reply is below. Perhaps it’s a genuine deal, but we have our doubts.

Here’s the text of the first, introductory email:

Subject: CONTRACT OF SUPPLYING BICYCLES

Dear Sir,

CONTRACT OF SUPPLYING BICYCLES

Your company was introduced to us by a sister company as a reliable

supplier and Manufacturer of bicycles and we will be very happy to establish

a gainful business relationship with you.

Recently, we were awarded contract of supplying bicycles to the

Federal Ministry of sports nationwide. The contract value is $20.8 million

US dollars only and the duration is 9 months.

Could you please reconfirm to us if your company can manufacture

the above product as we are prepared to re-award you the contract of

manufacturing and supplying us bikes.

We will be very glad to hear from you soonest.
