Nottingham hosts UK’s first urban free trials event

Fifteen riders from the UK and Europe will take on the specially designed course, which mixes traditional trials obstacles with BMX-style ramps.

Riders include three times World Champion Peter Kraus; Britain’s Eddie Tongue who came second in the Red Bull Bike battle in Boston; Kris Leeson, the 2002 British Bike trial Champion; and Vincent Hermance – six times French Champion.

The wildcard entries have been named as Czech Michael Matys, famous for breaking the world step record in 2001 and 15-year old Chris Doney, the youngest competitor.

The judges include trials veterans Paul Thomson, Terry Graves, and Barry Deeks, as well as Mike Rose, editor of Dirt, and Chris Holman, ex of Future now the Backyard Jam organiser for Seventies distribution.

The mike-meisters will be BikeBiz.co.uk BBS regulars Clive Gosling, the two time British BMX racing champion, and Chris Ratcliffe from the Section 7 website.

The art of bike hopping and balancing on the edge of unsteady obstacles, otherwise known as bike trials, has been adapted for the Red Bull Bike Battle so that, unlike conventional trials, competitors are not penalised for coming into contact with the ground, instead they are encouraged demonstrate "skill and flair".

Riders will negotiate large logs, tackle concrete bars, nail metal rails and manual hollow tubes, whilst hopping down steps, spinning off ledges and jumping over bollards.
