Cue inflation jokes: Oxford's bicycling mayor opens new bike shop by pumping an inner tube until it bursts.

Oxford bike shop opens with a bang

Bike Zone of Oxford has opened a second store, a bigger and more central city centre shop.

The new store stocks 200 bikes from the likes of Ridgeback, Raleigh, Cannondale, Trek, Gary Fisher and Genesis.
The new St Michael Street store also has an upstairs cafe, Zappi’s Bike Cafe

The shop and cafe was officially opened last week by Elise Benjamin, Oxford’s 51st Lord Mayor. And the first Green one. She has been an Oxford councillor for ten years and is a passionate cyclist. She eschews the Mayoral limo, preferring her bike. This was given to her a few years ago by local cycling campaign group Cyclox.

Ms Benjamin refuses to open big-box retailers, such as Asda, and will only open independents, which she says are better for the local economy.

More pix of the opening can be found on the Flickr of Dominic Langan, MD of Madison.
