A new ‘Cycle Hub’ has opened at Peckham Rye station in London, featuring a new Brompton Dock, as well as 62 new parking slots.
The station will now offer 20 Brompton folding bikes for hire, as well as those offered by local bike maintenance company ‘Bicycle Nation’. A further three Brompton Docks are to be installed at Southern managed stations in Redhill, Three Bridges and Haywards Heath.
Southern’s service delivery director James Burt said: “This is Southern’s first cycle hub in London combining bike parking, maintenance and hire in one location providing an all-over service for cyclists. Parking for bikes at the station has been limited up to now and we are really pleased we have been able to use this space to help satisfy a growing demand for cycling in London.”
Until now, Peckham Rye had only 20 cycle spaces available at the station which were oversubscribed.
Brompton Dock managing director Harry Scrope added: “Brompton Dock is delighted to be launching at Peckham Rye in conjunction with Southern. The Brompton folding bike opens up a myriad of new travel opportunities for business and leisure travel. By train, tube or in the boot of your car, see how a Brompton can reduce your travel time. For £2.50 a day there is quite simply no quicker, more reliable or cheaper way across London. As a member of Brompton Dock you will find our folding bikes for hire at over 22 locations nationally, including eight in the capital. Watch out for Brompton Dock opening shortly at the Southern stations of Redhill, Three Bridges and Haywards Heath.”
As part of a drive to ‘get passengers on their bikes’, the project has been brought to fruition by the Department for Transport, Transport for London, Southwark Council and railways operator Southern.
