GoPro, A2B electric bike, Plume Mudguard and Pacific all up for a prize

Bike industry scores multiple nods in Design Museum Awards

Four cycle trade products have found their way into the nominations for the Designs of the Year Awards 2014, including at least one UK-designed product.

The products will have to wait a few months to find out if they’ve won one of the coveted prizes, but until then they’ll be on show at an exhibition at the Design Museum from March 26 to August 25 2014.

The Plume Mudguard, designed by Patrick Laing and Dan McMahon, have gone from humble beginnings on Kickstarter last year to gain the accolade. If you’re unfamiliar, the Plume is a recoiling bicycle mudguard which maintains a thin, sleek profile when protecting the rider’s back; when not needed it recoils into a tight circle under the saddle. Plume can be pulled out and recoiled while riding and is constructed from resilient materials.

A2B’s Obree electric bike is also nominated, perhaps a sign of how far e-bike design has come over the decade. According to the Awards: "The A2B range is the result of engineering innovation and loving attention to detail from this passionate design team, based in Berlin. The Obree features regenerative braking, a removable display and a high torque motor to assist the rider up any hill."

The GoPro Hero 3 Black has been honoured for producing professional quality video easy whilst being affordable, allowing amateur film makers to achieve unprecedented results, said the Awards.

Finally, the FMOVE bicycle, designed by its in-house development team Section Zero, is Pacific Inc’s 9-speed, 11.5kg IFmove that unfolds in seconds and combines striking looks with rigid aluminium construction. It can also be rolled along on its 20-inch light weight wheels whilst folded.
